The global blocking of small viruses is starting to hit the TV supply chain. This delays the appearance of new 2020 lines in our stores and apartments. But consumer interest does not stand still. Today we offer you to get acquainted with one of the new LG Nanocell TVs.
The NANO90 series sits at the top of LG's 2020 LCD 4K TV lineup. It will take advantage of full array direct backlighting with local dimming. The image will be formed by the new version of the LG Alpha 7 Gen.3 processor (third generation).
In the meantime, experience suggests that the use of NanoCell technology should provide a picture with attractive colors by the standards of premium LCD TVs. In the proposed review of LG 65NANO906 as a representative of the series, we will take a closer look at the features of the new product.
LG NANO90 review
Design
Since the technological solution of image formation does not change radically, the electronic filling remains about the same. Consequently, there are minimal changes in design compared to the LG SM9000 TV. LG NANO90 replaces the previous model's moon-shaped stand with legs. Well, the structure will be more stable.
The frames remain the same thin. Their appearance has changed a bit. From more elaborate with a border to a more ascetic gray metallic. That once again underlines the belonging of the TV to the middle segment. The location of the connectors has become more thoughtful.
The rear panel no longer has connections perpendicular to the surface. Those. cables will be less kinky and less interfering with installing the TV on the wall. The rear connectors are now all "looking" down. No more significant design changes were found.
Image quality
Traditionally for LG LCD TVs, the NANO906 series uses IPS panels, which can be considered a double-edged sword. IPS matrices, in contrast to VA matrices, provide a significant advantage in terms of viewing angles. But due to the technologically more difficult control of the light flux passing through the crystals, they have restrictions on the level of black tone.
The Nano90 TV Panel has somehow magically gotten rid of these issues in many ways. At the same time, the visibility is maintained at the same level. And the reason for this is the new backlight control system. Or, as the manufacturer calls it, Pixel Compensation.
This is not a completely new concept in the world of LCD TVs and is based on power redistribution. Those. in dark areas, the backlight power is "taken away". And at the same time, it is transmitted to its destination - the bright areas. It is clear that for greater contrast, they need to be highlighted more. Especially in HDR mode.
A side-by-side comparison with the 2019 LG SM9000 (also an IPS panel with direct LED backlighting and local dimming) shows just how amazing the pixel compensation effect is. In the demo, LG is a city at night. Here, the 2020 screen displays much less backlight bleeding around bright areas than the 2019 model.
The overall black level and contrast are much higher. In fact, in both respects - especially in the absence of blooming - the NANO90 image is essentially not even recognized as an IPS panel image. Of course, this is “recognition” based on our own experience.
In the dark areas of the NANO906's picture, there is no sense of loss of detail, despite deeper black levels. In contrast, the new model's dark scenes actually contain more light and finer details than its predecessor, creating a much more immersive 3D effect.
For example, in the part of the video when the sun rises behind a dark building in the foreground, on the NANO90 screen you can see the details of arches and windows in the silhouette of the building. And they are almost impossible to see on TV in 2019. Likewise, when shooting at night with the NANO90, trees are clearly visible against the night sky, while on the 2019 model they are almost invisible.
In addition, huge reductions in backlight bleed and generally much better black levels require the screen to reduce the brightness of extremely bright areas. Conversely, the new power management system allows bright areas (such as a brightly lit Ferris wheel against a night sky) to appear significantly brighter than on the 2019 model.
The ability to better control backlighting allowed the NANO906 to create richer and more natural (convincing) colors in dark scenes. This is due to the fact that around dark colors there is less gray, low-contrast "fog" through which you have to break through. It is sometimes hard to believe that the 2019 and 2020 models generally share the same basic LCD panel technology.
Vivid colors also look slightly better on the NANO90, thanks to the extra power the TV can redistribute in bright areas. The combination of better lighting control and LG's latest Dynamic Tone Mapping also means the brightest parts of the NANO90's HDR images have more detail and a slightly warmer, more natural tone.
Smart functions
The webOS operating system responsible for the intelligence of the NANO90 TV is version 5.0. It did not receive any significant differences from webOS 4.5 . But there are some evolutionary advances. Improved AI Preview and Contextual Search algorithms.
The AirPlay 2 function, which is responsible for connecting iOS devices with the TV, is now "hardcoded" in the operating system. You can easily transfer any content to the big screen from the small screens of your smart devices. In addition, Apple's HomeKit smart home control system is supported .
Sound
The sound system of the LG NANO90 TV has received downshifting compared to last year's model. Now it does not include a subwoofer, and it has acquired a 2.0 configuration instead of 2.2. The total sound power of the downward facing front speakers is 20W.
Of course, the thin case and with a subwoofer does not sound ice-cold in terms of soundtrack for action movies. After all, there needs a dynamic, rumbling bass. With lonely front-facing speakers, only dialogues are reproduced well. So, if you need high-quality audio support for movies, it is better to purchase a soundbar, as a minimum. For example, LG SL6Y .
Connections
We already mentioned above that the location of the connectors on the rear panel has changed. But their strength has not changed. There are still 4 HDMI and 3 USB connectors on board. The two HDMI connectors, which are typical for LG, are version 2.1. In addition to these connectors, there is a composite video input (via an adapter), a LAN input and a digital optical audio output.
You can connect to the Internet through the built-in Wi-Fi network adapter. Bluetooth version 5.0 connectivity is available. Depending on the location - one or two antenna sockets. But in any case, there is the possibility of receiving both terrestrial / cable TV signal and satellite.
