In a small or medium-sized apartment, a quality central router placed in an open area may be sufficient. However, in a two-story house with concrete walls, a safe room, a long hallway, or areas where the router is located inside a communication cabinet, a Mesh system may be necessary.

A Mesh system includes multiple units that operate as a single network. The mobile device switches between units without needing to manually change networks, and coverage in distant rooms improves. However, Mesh isn’t a magic solution. If the units communicate wirelessly over a long distance or through thick walls, some performance may be compromised. The best solution is a wired connection between the Mesh units, known as wired backhaul. If there’s an existing network infrastructure in the walls, it’s a significant consideration that should be utilized.

The position of the router is as influential as the model itself. Place it in a central, elevated, and as open as possible location, away from metal cabinets, microwaves, thick walls, and other wireless devices. A powerful router installed in a closed corner of the house may deliver weaker results than a medium-strength router placed correctly.

Number of Devices and Usage Type at Home

A household with two phones, a laptop, and a smart TV is not the same as a home where work computers, consoles, streamers, smart home systems, IP cameras, and network printers are operating simultaneously. As the number of connections increases, it’s advisable to prioritize a stronger processor, adequate memory, and an updated Wi-Fi standard.

Working from home demands stability, especially during video calls and file uploads. For gaming, low latency and a wired connection to the console or computer (when possible) are important. 4K streaming requires stable bandwidth but typically doesn’t need the same response times as competitive gaming. Anyone needing more wired connections could add a network switch, but be sure to verify that the router includes the required speeds first.

Features Worth Checking Before Purchase

Not every advanced feature is worth the extra cost, but some capabilities directly affect everyday usage:

  • WPA3 support provides a more updated security layer for the wireless network.
  • A guest network allows you to connect visitors without exposing them to your computers, printers, and smart devices.
  • Parental controls are useful for setting access times, basic filtering, and separating children’s devices.

Firmware updates are a central consideration. A router that is constantly connected to the internet, so it’s crucial to choose a brand and model that receive security updates over time. A particularly low price for an old model may not be a good deal if support for it is limited.

External antennas are not the sole measure of coverage quality. They may help with signal direction, but internal design, component quality, wireless standards, and home location influence just as much. Even a large number of antennas doesn't guarantee good reception through a safe room or several concrete walls.

Budget Considerations: Where Not to Compromise

For basic use in a small apartment, a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with Gigabit ports, WPA3 security, and a management app will typically be the right choice. For a busy family home, look for a model with good performance under load, QoS, and a Mesh system as needed. For professional users, advanced gaming, or especially fast fiber plans, check Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, 2.5GbE ports, and broader management options.

There’s no point in paying for ultra-high wireless speeds if your internet package is slow, devices don’t support the new standard, or reception is diminished due to a problematic location. Conversely, saving a little on an old router could lead to daily frustration, disconnections, and earlier-than-expected upgrades.

Before ordering, jot down your connection speed, home size, number of floors, number of active devices, and devices needing a wired connection. With this data, comparing models becomes simpler and the purchase more accurate. The right router isn’t necessarily the most expensive on the shelf — it’s the one that provides stable reception, useful speed, and scalability without paying twice.
